Genoa Cricket 1893 v Milan Kingsgrove

14.06.09

(revised)

Genoa Cricket’s unbeaten run continued today, albeit with a less than flawless display.  While 2009 has seen Genoa produce a variety of stunning performances, today was less flamboyant than usual but still valuable, distancing our team considerably from second-placed Kingsgrove.

Indika continued to prove his worth as one of Serie B’s finest batsmen with yet another half-century to his credit and making 63. Nuwan not only chalked up 56 but he later bowled well and produced the catch of the season, an incredible one-handed snatch over his shoulder on the run, dismaying the Milan batsman who had expected it to go for four.

Captain Niranga played well, but when he was run out for 37 there was a minor mid-order collapse and Genoa found itself 182 for 8 in only the 28th over. Once again, it was our wicket-keeper Kalou, coming in at number 9, who powered our total towards respectability, just as Genoa had looked like scoring their lowest home total of the season. Kalou scored an entertaining 46 and was backed up by Habib and then our great Italian “Enrico” (STILL ‘not out’ for 2009!!)  and they put on a further  78 invaluable runs to leave Genoa’s total at 260 all-out.

Genoa’s opening bowlers started off erratically, gifting nearly 30 extras to Kingsgrove in the first two overs.  But the joy of Genoa in 2009 is their incredible depth in talent which allows Captain Niranga to change his plans easily when things go badly.  Asking Ralph to take the third over was a master-stroke; the player was eager to cement his place back in the team after missing the previous two games. A four-wicket haul was his reward and his speed and accuracy put Genoa firmly back in the driving seat after a rocky start. Genoa’s fielding was at its best which put the batsmen under increasing pressure while Madupa and Nuwan were spinning the ball effectively to keep the run-rate down. Then Pethum recovered his momentum and took 3 late wickets, including the final scalping of Kingsgrove legend Kamal, who came out of retirement for this top-of-the-table clash only to suffer the batsman’s nightmare: the golden duck.

With Kingsgrove all out for 180, Genoa could celebrate the consolidation of first place knowing that this team really has enormous talent, an attribute which hopefully will take the team onto some silverware this year.
